Due to a potential road construction this project has not been able to be completed. The Panhurehure inlet society decided to transfer the funds to another project that flows into the same harbour, the Manakau Harbour.
The funds have been transferred to The Brookby Project. This project will plant 5000 seedlings along the Papakura Stream which will contribute to the health of the Manakau Harbour
Hi, I’m Richard Archer, Chairman of the Pahurehure Inlet Protection Society, or PIPS. PIPS was formed in 2001 by a group of community members who were concerned about the state of the inlet.
Our goal is to restore the inlet as a place for people to swim, boat and enjoy, as well as a habitat for fish and shore birds.
In 2013, we hit a major milestone when we completed a project to remove the mangroves that were choking the inlet. The transformation was incredible – the mud receded making way for sandy beaches and a breath-taking influx of wading birdlife.
We are now focussed on shoreline restoration and have been working closely with local and regional government and community groups to restore this much loved area.
We’ve joined up with Million Metres to raise funds for a planting project along the Puhurehure Inlet Esplanade.
The Esplanade is a public walkway a short distance from central Papakura. It is a favourite spot for residents to walk, jog and enjoy the outdoors.
We want to restore a section of the walkway to provide habitat for shoreline birds, help stabilise banks and reduce erosion into the inlet.
This project area includes 240 metres of the shoreline and extends one metre below the walkway and up to three metres above it.
We will remove invasive weeds from the area and plant it with bird-friendly shoreline reeds, ground covers and native shrubs. Where it makes sense, we will plant trees such as Nikau, Pohutukawa and Kowhai.
The Pahurehure Inlet is located on the south-eastern side of the Manukau Harbour. For decades the inlet and the harbour basin have been the recipients of sediment and polluted storm water that drains into the harbour.
In August 2016, the Manukau Harbour received a D in Auckland Council’s Marine Report Card for poor water quality.
Local and regional government, community groups and iwi are all working to improve the water quality and environment in this area. This project will contribute to the health of the inlet and a healthier Manukau Harbour.
We hope you will take this opportunity to donate to our project today. With your donation we will remove invasive weeds and plant native grasses, shrubs and trees.
The project will provide habitat for migratory wading birds, stabilise banks and reduce erosion into the inlet.
We have received $2,000 in match funding through Million Metres. So for every metre donated by a member of the public, Million Metres will support a metre, up to the value of $2,000 in total.
Now we just need your help to get us all the way to our goal! That will mean another great restoration project for New Zealand’s waterways is underway this winter.
Our sincere thanks to our project sponsor Veolia. Veolia has been providing high quality water and wastewater services to the Papakura Community since 1997.
Thanks also to support from Auckland Council Parks and Reserves who are contributing tree removal, mulching and stump grinding work towards this project.
