Project Description:

This tributary is in the middle of 3.9 ha of regenerating bush, comprising kanuka and scattered titoki, tawa, matai, totara, kowhai and cabbage trees. However the stream banks are open and unshaded and dominated by pasture grasses. Planting this tributary will provide shade to the stream and also hold the banks in place during periods of heavy rain, helping reduce sediment load of the stream and also helping provide habitat and shade for stream fauna.

Waikohu River boundaries owned by this farmer have been fenced. This farmer actively plants riparian edges and farm corners where possible. The Waikohu River already supports small native fish, eels and native insects, so riparian planting of this tributary will help protect these populations.
