Planting season is here and you’re invited!

23 May 2019 by The Million Metres team

This winter Million Metres has lots of opportunities for you to get involved in planting and do some good for Aotearoa’s waterways. Planting is also an opportunity to lend a hand to volunteer groups in our communities who work year round to care for our environment. And a morning out in the bush is such a great way to unwind and reconnect with nature.

So join us for some planting and enjoy the warm glow that comes from getting stuck in for a good cause!

First up, we’re stoked to announce a series of planting days co-hosted with our Foundation Partner Alsco. Here’s what’s happening:

AucklandSunday June 9th - We’ll be heading out to Matuku Link near Bethells Beach. This is a beautiful area of the Waitakere ranges that links untouched kauri forest, a river valley, wetland and the sea. We’ll be getting busy with planting, weeding and learning more about the amazing work that the passionate and knowledgeable people at Matuku Link are doing to restore the area. Register here.

Wellington – Saturday June 22nd - We’ll be planting native plants and trees along a section of the Wainuiomata River at Baring Head reserve. The river and its surrounds are home to many species of native fish and birds. Planting the river banks will improve habitat by stopping sediment and other pollutants entering the water and creating homes for birdlife. Register here.

Whangarei – Saturday July 6th - Led by the awesome people from Whitebait Connection we’ll be continuing planting work along a tributary of the Hātea River, directly upstream of Whāngārei Falls - a very popular swimming spot for locals and tourists. Currently fundraising through Million Metres, you can support the project here. And register here for the planting day.

Christchurch – July/August – We’ll be contributing to the restoration work of the Wairarapa Stream at Jellie Park. This project is currently fundraising through Million Metres – check out and support their plans here. Planting day date and registrations coming soon.

Then, later in the season, Million Metres will be holding two more planting days - one in the Auckland region and one in Otago. These are both shaping up to be great days out so look out for announcements about them in the coming weeks.

If you can’t make it along to a Million Metres planting day then there are many other planting days being organised directly by the 30+ restoration projects we work with around the country. We update our Facebook Page regularly as these opportunities arise.

And if you want to organise a special planting day for your workplace you can get in touch with Million Metres and we’ll see what we can do to help.

Thanks a lot for your support and happy planting!
