Project Description:

In memory of our dear friend Maggie Lawton we have started a mission to fund a local restoration project in her name in Wanaka.

Maggie passed away on 13 March after a short battle with cancer. She was an active champion for sustainability and a member of the Sustainable Business Network Board for many years. She also had a passion for water and for the Otago region.

Maggie’s family is asking people to make donations in lieu of flowers to fund the planting of stream banks for Maggie ($20 goes towards planting four trees and one metre of stream restoration).

The donations will go towards Million Metres’ next riparian restoration project in the Wanaka area. The funds will be used to purchase native trees and plants and restore a section of a Wanaka waterway.

Maggie Lawton

Maggie was an active member of the Auckland Environmental Business Network back in the late 1990s and remained on the Board as we established the Sustainable Business Network in 2002.

Maggie brought tremendous skills, a plethora of impressive qualifications and tremendous energy to her work. She applied her expertise to resource management, infrastructure, sustainable building and urban design, water management and in improving community outcomes.

Nearly every major sustainability effort here in NZ has had some of Maggie’s input – from a number of years at Landcare Research, to management roles in local government, to consulting and more recently as an Otago Regional Councillor.

She was very smart, very engaged and extremely practical in her approach. We will miss her terribly.
