WE MET OUR GOAL! Thank you! (March 2021)

The Brookby Project is now fully funded. Thank you!  If you’re looking for another project to support that is in urgent need, please check out the Cardrona Kaitiaki project in Otago that closes very soon!!

Project update – new goal: $36,471 (aug 2020)

The Brookby project has received $11,929 from the Pahurehure Inlet Esplanade Planting fundraiser that raised the funds but have been unable to complete the project. Due to a potential road construction the Panhurehure inlet society who ran the campaign decided to transfer the funds to another project that flows into the same harbour, the Manakau Harbour.

This means that the new fundraising goal for the Brookby Project is now $36,471.

About Us

We are Conservation Volunteers New Zealand and we bring together volunteers to undertake conservation projects throughout New Zealand. We have teamed up with locals in the community to help restore a section of Papakura Stream which eventually flows out to the precious Manukau Harbour.  We are really excited and grateful to be working with the landowner who sees the great restoration value for this section of the stream.

The Stream

The Papakura catchment has seen a lot of change over the years with land clearance and loss of stream bank habitat. This project area is part of a large catchment and it will take a lot of community effort working together to restore the streams that flow to the Manukau Harbour.

This is the start of a big, exciting, potential series of projects that will enhance the health of the catchment. The plants will help to stabilise banks, prevent erosion, reduce sediment entering the water as well as providing habitat for birds, lizards and insects.

This is within the Forest and Bird’s South East Wild Link project area and these native plants and trees will provide potential important habitat for Kaka, Bellbirds, Kereru and Tui as well as New Zealand’s only native mammal, the long tailed bat.

Our Project

We are restoring a section of the Papakura Stream with native plants and trees. We will be working with the local community including Brookby Primary School. The children will come and help with the planting and learn about the importance of healthy waterways. We will also have groups of volunteers helping with the site preparation, planting and maintenance of the site. The plants will be eco sourced and provided by Te Whangai Trust. This project site will require a fair amount of preparation to remove the woody weeds that are already along the stream edge. The land owner has already made a start to clear some of the weed species from the area.

Thank you Modern Environments

Huge thank you to Modern Environments, an environmental contracting company, that has given this project some amazing in kind support through creating the planting plan and carrying out the site preparation!

We Need Your Support

We are raising $48400 to help restore this important waterway. Over the years the riparian planting that we will carry out in this area will benefit the biodiversity and water quality of the Papakura Stream. We are so grateful for all the donations to this project to allow us to carry out this important work – Thank you so much for your support!
